THE OLD WAR HORSE
THE VOICE OF GENERAL JAMES LONGSTREET CAMP #1247, SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS
VOLUME 22, ISSUE 3, March 2020
Thank you to all you who contacted your representatives in the Virginia General Assembly. Clearly it served a purpose but was not enough to change many of the votes that really mattered. Unfortunately, the vote in the last election sealed the fate of continued monument protection. Now we can only wait to see how the process works its way out on the local level over the next several years. Our Brigade Commander and future First Lieutenant Commander, Andrew Moorehead, should be commended for the yeoman's effort he put into the fight. Speaking of monuments, none of the above has or will affect our efforts to erect monuments to those Confederate soldiers who died during the war and are buried in the Soldiers Section of Hollywood Cemetery. Our headstones continue to be installed and will be dedicated on April 26 at 3:30PM. Please let me know if you can help any anyway i.e. placing flags at the graves earlier in the week, reading names or helping to point out headstones as their names are read. Please attend as this may be the last dedication program. I have tied down a location for our December banquet. This year we will move all the way west to the Pickle Barrel Restaurant. If you have not tried it yet I encourage you to do so before we meet there on December 2, so at least you will know where it is in Centerville. It is on Plaza Drive near Broad and Ashland Road. Unlike past banquets which have tended to be quite expensive, this one will involve simply ordering off the menu. Most items are under $11.00 and the most expensive thing is the seafood platter at $20.50. Ruth Ann Coski will be our speaker. Andy

"Lee & Napoleon at the East Cavalry Field" by Paul Sacra This month Paul will present a revisionist topic shared only by a few well know historians and ignored by all others. Was Lee's worst day as a Commander on the 3rd Day of Gettysburg or......? Paul and his wife Priscilla have been with the Longstreet Camp for several years now and have enjoyed working with the SCV state committee on Graves & Monuments. Paul took the role as Chairman of this Committee and also serves as the Lt. Commander of the 2nd Brigade. The team of Priscilla and Paul have cleaned over 5,000 Confederate tombstones, listed over 4,000 names on the Confederate Soldier's burial site worksheet and have a listing of about 370 Confederate Monuments across Virginia. They have lived in Richmond for the past 13 years and enjoy the company of two brown-boy cats named Buck & Boo. They enjoy all things Native, as they routinely dance in Native American Powwows and enjoy the culture. Hiking, traveling and the Southwest are passions they also enjoy.
